Merc II "Coutang" |
After three years being on the circuit, Holey Mercatoy'd died electrically. All was well..then one day it just never started again. I was right in the middle of packing for a move to a new home. The timing of this ordeal could not have come at a worse time. After three days trying to find the electrical problem I decided to park the car until I could get back to the repair. As time went by, the new home, kids in college etc..Merc wound up sitting for three years. A good friend of mine, Forrest Butcher continued to get on me about Merc sitting dead. I finally decided it was time to find out what ailed it. The frame under Merc rotted to the point that it actually ripped in half towing it to the "Fun Garage". I purchased another 1987 Mercury Cougar and decided to transfer the art panels to the new body. First snag...in 1987 Ford made three different wiring harnesses. My engine, steering column, fuel injection..everything electrical would not plug in. The first thought was to turn it to Chevy and install a 4.3 V-6. Instead a 1979 Mustang II came along with the little 2.3 four banger used in the Pinto,Capri, Mustang II and Ranger pickup. I decided to take everything but the rust. I put the engine, trans, steering column, dashboard, wiring harness & fuel tank into the Cougar body. Now I have a "Coutang" a Mercury Mustang. Holey Mercatoy'd like most business' today experienced down sizing. Not only did the Merc V-6 go bye, bye.. 27 inches from the middle of the car was removed creating a Mini Merc. Now Merc is only a 2 seater. The original roof had to be removed to allow entry into the interior. |
