Shadow Boxed Wheel Wells
The following pictures are the final result of many hours creating 4 shadow boxes in front of, and behind the rear wheels.
This is a photo of the left side in front of the rear wheel.  I used a hard wheel grinder
to shape what was
left of the body that
was still in solid condition.
I realized after I was well underway on this part of the project, that I had made a serious documentation blunder. It was my intention from the start to document the process of a rusted daily driver, into an ArtCar.  Thus the blunder, I never took photos of the creation of these repaired areas.

These areas were rotted away. Gone!!!, huge gapping holes were all that was left of the lower rear fenders of the car. When I decided to repair these four areas, I did so with the intent of making the body sound again.  It was never my intention that this part of the car would become the shadow boxes that they are now.  I was just repairing rotted metal.

At the start it seemed insignificant as far as documentation of this step was concerned. It wasn't until these areas really started taking shape, that I realized that they too could also be included into the artwork of the car.  This is the reason there are no photos of the step by step process that went into the repair.
The process took 5 steps:

(1) the rotted area was covered with foil and screen to re-create a surface where there was none.
(2) this area was taped over with duct tape to firmly hold the foil and screen in place.
(3) The area was then fiberglassed solid, re-creating an inner fender again.
(4)  The area was then body worked using "tiger hair", a bondo that is impregnated with fiberglass fibers.
(5)  Finally, the area was sanded and contoured using #40 grit sand paper..gradually smoothing out the area out with finer grit paper, until the scratches were nearly gone. Then the area was ready for primer and white paint again
This is a photo of the left rear, behind the rear wheel. The entire bottom was completely gone. I had to span the length of the entire rear quarter.
This photo is the right rear , in front of the rear wheel. Once again, the body that remained was reshaped with a hard wheel grinder.
This is a photo of the right rear, behind the rear wheel. This area was the easiest to do.  The bottom was still
there, just a huge rot hole in the body that needed to be cut out, and reshaped with
the hard wheel grinder.
Then rebuild the rotted
inner fender
like the others.
